Breakfast Bowl

This is one of my go-to options for breakfast. I got this idea from Mike Dolce. He is a nutritionist and coach made popular by his work with elite MMA fighters. A lot of his fighters will eat this even the week leading up to a fight while they are cutting weight! This bowl has a good amount of calories but it is a clean source of nutrient dense foods that provide lasting energy. As Mike always says “Don’t count calories, Make calories count”. I couldn’t agree more, and the latest science is backing the claims of higher fat, nutrient dense diets. This bowl is also great to have a few hours before an intense workout or anything that is physically taxing.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup oats (steel cut, old fashion oatmeal, or oat bran)

  • 1 cup water (adjust as needed depending on what you use, oat bran requires more)

  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

  • 1 tbsp flax seeds (ground)

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • 2/3 cup strawberries (frozen)

  • 1/3 cup blueberries (frozen)

  • 1 tbsp almond butter or peanut butter (natural kind)

* Can sub raisins, raspberries or preferred berries for fruit (Use about one cup of fruit total)Optional toppings

  • 1/4 cup walnuts or pecans

  • 1/2 ripe banana

  • 1 tbsp hemp seeds (shelled, hemp hearts)

  • 1 tsp maple syrup (natural kind / organic grade A)

How to Make it

Cook oats using stovetop directions. Once water boils add oats. Let cook 1-2 mins then add seeds, cinnamon & frozen fruit. Continually stir another 3-5 mins until desired consistency. Pour contents into bowl & add additional toppings. Almond butter, nuts, banana etc.
